Sanctity of Human Life There are shadowy topics that are easier to sidestep than address, easier to bypass than confront, and easier to tiptoe around than to discuss. Some of the difficulty is founded on the many faces that can be placed on the problem depending upon the source that one chooses to see as authoritative. Another part is that the problem, although not held up as a model, is so embedded in the practice of a society that it is virtually impossible for a person not to be personally affected. It may be a part of our own journey or that of one whom we know and love but in either case we would rather not revisit the distress. Such a topic is abortion. It is hard to come to grips with the process, impolite to discuss, and full of a wide range of intense emotions for those personally touched, therefore our tendency is to just leave it alone, always there in the background but largely segregated from any real dialogue. However, the sensitivity of a topic does not detract from its reality nor from its long term affects on those involved and the fabric of the society that quietly looks away. Abortion will not allow any winners. The magnitude of this "procedure" is staggering. Over 50 million pregnancies have been terminated through abortive methods. In 1983 President Ronald Reagan issued a proclamation establishing a National Sanctity of Human life Sunday. It said in part: "These children, over tenfold the number of Americans lost in all our nations wars, will never laugh, never sing, never experience the joy of human love; nor will they strive to heal the sick, or feed the poor, or make peace among nations. Abortion has denied them the first and most basic of human rights, and we are infinitely poorer for their loss. We are poorer, not simply for lives not led and for contributions not made, but also for the erosion of our sense of the worth and dignity of every individual. To diminish the value of one category of human life is to diminish us all". As Christians we are the recipients of grace and have no basis for condemning anyone but we are also called upon to provide for those who do not have the ability to provide for themselves. There is in Matthew 25:34-46 a clear picture of the expectations associated with the Kingdom of Heaven as it relates to helping the helpless. I cannot fathom a more precise representation of the "least of these" than the unborn. Verlin
