Children of all ages enjoy receiving gifts. A certain joy comes when we acquire a valued possession that costs us nothing! Of course, the greatest gift we ever receive is the salvation that Jesus paid for in full through His death on the cross. But one of the marks of maturity is developing the joy that coming in giving gifts to others. In the long run, this is the greater joy.
One role of the church is to teach, train, and offer opportunities for Christians to give gifts to others. Two such occasions will be before us in the next couple of weeks. On Friday night, October 24 we will be giving away peanuts and fan signs at the Cleveland vs Walker Valley Football game. We had a great experience doing this a few weeks back at the Cleveland – Bradley game. Again, volunteers are needed! Can you meet us at the Walker Valley High School parking lot at 5:00 p.m.? Again, we will have grilled hamburgers for all the workers.
Help is also needed for our presence at the 2003 Downtown Block Party. Each year our church gives away about 2000 servings of popcorn! Can you help at the booth in either the early or later part of the evening? And can you pop popcorn in advance for us to serve? (we need at least 12 dozen barrels of popcorn prepared before we start!)
Frequently, people ask me why we are giving these things away. I enjoy replying that these treats are expressions of grace from our church and that they are free just like the love of God.
To help with either of these ministries, mark that box on the registration form of the Evangel. We will be contacting you about further details.
Trusting in Jesus Christ is first about receiving. We understand we can never repay the price that was paid for our forgiveness. But a maturing faith focuses more and more about what we can give. Jesus said, I tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward. Mark 9:41 NIV
Even a cup of popcorn or peanuts given in Jesus’ name is an offering of grace. Come help us and enjoy the blessing.
