Pastor's Page

Posted on February 26, 2004 ...

Several years ago, the recording artist sometimes known as Prince sang a song declaring: We’re Going to Party Like It’s 1999. Today I want to slightly embellish that song’s lyrics with a special announcement.

This Sunday, We’re Going to Worship Like It’s 1976! Hey, why not? Lots of sports teams are suiting up in throw back uniforms. And one of our Sunday School departments recently had a 1970’s theme for their Valentine’s Party. Can you envision us standing in the sanctuary this Sunday singing Pass It On with everyone wearing polyester leisure suits, bell-bottom pants, or shirts with big puffy sleeves?

GOOD NEWS. While we ARE going to worship like it’s 1976, it will NOT be because of the music we sing or the clothes we wear. We are going to worship like it’s 1976 because THIS SUNDAY is the first time since then that the church has been able to convene on a SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 29 to worship God. (Another opportunity to gather for worship on a SUNDAY, February 29 will not occur until 2032.)

According to our Sunday School attendance records, 187 people have been in our Bible Study every one of the past four Sundays. Even more folks have made it to a worship hour every week. But even if you could not attend each of the previous four February Sundays, THIS SUNDAY is the most unique of all. We only get an opportunity like this once every 28 years. Don’t miss it.

Hanging of the Green
6:00 p.m., Sunday, November 30
Hanging of the Green is a worship service centered around the songs and symbols of the Holiday Season. As the Sanctuary is decorated with sights and sounds, worshipers see how candles, greenery, poinsettias, manger scenes, and other objects become part of our Christmas traditions.
