By now we are well into the Spring sports season. Many a family is spending a fair amount of time at the baseball park, soccer field, or even the gymnasium. Participation in athletics is a good way for a child to get some healthy exercise and learn some valuable lessons in life. However, sometimes some poor lessons can be communicated too.
Jim Sundberg spent 22 years in major league baseball. Afterwards, he and his wife, Janet, co-authored a book entitled, How to Win at Sports Parenting. Their motivation for this writing came from observing an increase in aggression and unsportsmanlike conduct – not by the players, but by parents and other adults! One has to wonder about what lessons are being taught. Sports activities give Christians an opportunity to integrate positive values and character traits with real-life situation. Here are some of Sundberg’s suggestions to help parents navigate the pressure-packed sports scene: - Never denigrate another player on your team or on the opposing them – even in conversation in the stands.
- Never question a coach’s strategies, decisions, or overall skills in public; if you have a beef with the coach, make an appointment to see him or her in private.
- Never verbally abuse an umpire or referee.
- Never use sarcasm in a cheer.
- Always cheer for a good play, no matter which team makes it.
- Always accept a win with humility.
- Always accept defeat with good-natured sportsmanship.
- Always show appreciation to adult volunteers; they give so much of their time and energy.
- Always remain quiet when you doubt the helpfulness of a contemplated comment or cheer.
- Always show interest in parents and children’s lives outside the game.
The Sundbergs are right. Teaching a child respect, composure, and sportsmanship are far more important than the number of wins accumulated during a season. And these lessons will remain long after your child is no longer fielding grounders or scoring goals. I pray that Christian parents and coaches will set the right examples.
