This morning, Emily Lynn, one of our newest church members, is in our office volunteering to answer the telephone. (The secretaries are attending a Bradley Baptist Association Secretarial Luncheon). Emily first attended our church a couple of years ago through her friendship with Matt Moore. At the time, she and Matt were co-workers in the Extended School Program (ESP). Emily is an example of a healthy process of church growth.

Numerous resources conclude that the most effective influence in leading someone to attend and to become involved in a local church is the invitation of a family member or friend. Isn’t it interesting that the most successful technique for growing a congregation is also the least expensive? And yet many times we fail to extend an invitation to the unchurched people around us.

During August we are going to emphasize our responsibility to invite people to church with us. My challenge to you as a church is to collectively invite 500 people each week to attend our services and ministries. A place is provided on the worship registration form for you to indicate how many people you personally invited. It should not be difficult for each of us to extend a personal invitation to at least 3 or 4 people each week. Begin thinking now about someone you can encourage to join with you in our church ministries. Then, give those folks a call or a visit or even send a card asking them to accompany you to our church. In doing so, you are enhancing the possibility of growth in their spiritual lives and offering our church the blessing of a new friendship. May I personify the adage that says: There are no strangers in life; only friends I haven't met yet. See you Sunday.
