While THIS WEEK is election week in our community, NEXT WEEK is an important time of election in the ministry of our church. On Sunday morning we will elect men to serve in the office of Deacon for the next three years. I trust that you will give this matter ample prayer and consideration. In doing so, read carefully the qualifications and expectations for Deacons found both on the front of this newsletter and on the back of Sunday’s ballot.

Also, at next Wednesday’s business meeting we will elect church members to a variety of leadership positions in our church ministry. Special thanks goes out to our Nominating Committee and Committee on Committees for the work they have done in recruiting these people for service.

Because they do not receive any monetary compensation for their efforts, we sometimes refer to these servants as Volunteers. We Tennesseans are quite fond of the title Volunteers (GO BIG ORANGE!!). But even so, those folks who freely give themselves to the Lord’s work are far more than Volunteers. They are Disciples! Recognize that the two are not equal.

Volunteers give to a charity. Disciples give to God. Volunteers are accountable to no one else but themselves. Disciples, in contrast, answer to God. Volunteers tend to give as little as necessary. Disciples give as much as is needed. Volunteers do what is expected. Disciples go the extra mile. Volunteers give according to their abilities. Disciples give beyond their abilities. Volunteers are enlisted by some system of recruitment. Disciples are called by God. Volunteers will do what is sensible and reasonable. Disciples will do what requires faith.

In the New Testament, a disciple was one who accepted and followed the instruction and practices of a teacher. Jesus did not call twelve volunteers. He called the twelve and He calls us to be disciples. Will you answer Jesus’ call to follow Him and be His disciple?
Pastor’s P.S. Don’t forget! Invite someone to church this week!

Hanging of the Green
6:00 p.m., Sunday, November 30
Hanging of the Green is a worship service centered around the songs and symbols of the Holiday Season. As the Sanctuary is decorated with sights and sounds, worshipers see how candles, greenery, poinsettias, manger scenes, and other objects become part of our Christmas traditions.
