As I write these words literally millions of Americans are going to the polls, exercising their right to vote. What a precious liberty Americans possess in that we collectively determine which individuals serve in the offices that oversee our government. Various media outlets indicate that the race for President of the United States is extraordinarily close. The tightness of the election has intensified emotions on both sides. In a sense, our nation’s citizens are equally divided regarding their candidate of choice.
Allow me to share another example of something divided equally. Consider a Bible divided equally in half. Do you know where you would find the middle passage of the Bible? Actually, the place that divides the Bible into two equal haves is Psalm 118:8-9
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.
As Christians I think this middle verse has a word for us. While we look for leadership and service from our elected officials, ultimately our faith, our refuge, and help must reside in neither princes nor politicians but in the providence and power of Almighty God. The Lord God alone is worthy of our supreme allegiance.
Milton Berle once lampooned, Folks who don’t know why America is the “Land of Promise” should be here during election season! Political promises may come and go, but God’s Word stands forever! Today, I honestly do not know who will be the next President of the United States. But, no matter what the election results, I DO KNOW who reigns supreme and eternal: The Lord God! It is solely through our trust in Him alone that America indeed can be united as one nation under God. God bless America!
