Every once in a while the remote control to the television set disappears. In my head I realize that it really should be no big deal to walk up to the TV and manually make any channel or volume changes I desire. After all, I am old enough to remember when that was the only way to switch stations. (Of course, there were only three networks, so there were not many reasons to make adjustments.) But whenever the remote is missing, I become almost obsessed with locating that device. I look under the furniture, behind the pillows, in-between the cushions, and anywhere else I can imagine. Why? I think it has something to do with a subconscious habit developed of using the remote to flip through the TV channels. I refuse to give attention to one station very long.
We live in a fast-paced, multi-tasking world. Few things receive significant amounts of our attention. That is regrettable, because some amazing things happen when we give our attention to something. When we do, we begin to take notice of fascinating uniquenesses and individualities. When we begin to pay attention to someone, when we see the distinctions that make his or her life special, that person becomes more important to us. The more attention we give, the more we notice. And the more we notice, the greater our understanding, compassion, and affection.
Think about it. The people who most appreciate a great work of art have taken time to give attention to it. As a result, these people better understand what is taking place in a painting, sculpture, or composition.
We are disciples of Jesus. Therefore, we are to turn our attention to the Lord, to look upon Him so that we may discover both the nature of His love and the power of His work in our lives. Are you giving sufficient attention both to Jesus and to His Word? Are you growing in your appreciation of His unique love for you? Or are you extending to Him only a passing glance on your way to the next channel? What do you think?
