Have you made any New Year’s resolutions yet? The turning of the calendar is a good time to make some positive adjustments in our lives. Perhaps your resolution is to eat in a healthier manner. Some people may decide to give physical exercise a regular place in their schedules. Still others may determine to quit an unhealthy habit.

As for me, I have several ambitions for 2005. One goal is to watch less television and instead, spend more time reading. Also, I need to get back into an exercise routine. Finally, I have a goal to share more relationship time with friends and church members. We often say to people, We need to get together sometime. But, for whatever reasons, arranging a specific time and place to meet with a friend is often difficult to finalize. Good intentions to get together too easily fail to materialize. Is there a way to enhance the opportunity for quality time together?

Last September, I was with a mission team from our congregation working with David Tucker’s church start in Crofton, Maryland. While there, I discovered that David met with a discipleship group one morning a week at a local coffee shop. (Such a location was necessary because the new church does not have any facilities.) I was drawn to the thought of gathering with others in that kind of relaxed setting. The following idea began to take root:

During January, I am planning to spend Tuesday mornings from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. at Panera Bread on Paul Huff Parkway. I welcome the company of any and all who would like to join me there. I will have my Bible and some study materials with me. Perhaps I can gain some of your insights on my sermon and Bible study topics. We can share prayer concerns with one another. We can talk about the ministries of our church. And we can simply enjoy coffee and conversation among friends. Folks can come and go as their schedule permits. My prayer is this will be a relaxed place to share authentically with one another. I will be there this Tuesday morning at 7:00. I hope you can join me.

Hanging of the Green
6:00 p.m., Sunday, November 30
Hanging of the Green is a worship service centered around the songs and symbols of the Holiday Season. As the Sanctuary is decorated with sights and sounds, worshipers see how candles, greenery, poinsettias, manger scenes, and other objects become part of our Christmas traditions.
