Pastor's Page

Posted on April 27, 2005 ...

Years ago, someone composed these satirical job descriptions for church staff members. Have you heard them?

PASTOR:
Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.
More powerful than a locomotive.
Faster than a speeding bullet.
Walks on water.
Makes policies with God.

EDUCATION PASTOR
Able to leap short buildings in a single bound.
As powerful as a switch engine.
Just as fast as a speeding bullet.
Walks on water if the sea is calm.
Talks with God.

WORSHIP PASTOR
Leaps short buildings with a running start.
Almost as powerful as a switch engine.
Faster than a speeding BB.
Walks on water if he knows where the stumps are.
Is occasionally addressed by God.

STUDENT PASTOR
Runs into small buildings.
Recognizes locomotives 2 out of 3 times.
Uses a squirt gun.
Knows how to use the water fountain.
Mumbles to himself.

CHURCH SECRETARY
Lifts buildings to walk under them.
Kicks locomotives off the track.
Catches speeding bullets in her teeth.
Freezes water with a single glance.
When God speaks she says, "May I ask who is calling?"

While these descriptions are meant to be humorous, they communicate the great value and contributions made by a church’s office staff. In short: secretaries make things happen! This past Wednesday was National Secretary’s Day! Be certain to share your appreciation to our three secretaries: Jean Cannon, Jean Tucker, and Jeanne Franklin. Without these ladies, so much of our ministry simply would not exist. I think you’ll agree that, while pastors are “a dime a dozen,” good church secretaries are worth a fortune. Thanks ladies.

Hanging of the Green
6:00 p.m., Sunday, November 30
Hanging of the Green is a worship service centered around the songs and symbols of the Holiday Season. As the Sanctuary is decorated with sights and sounds, worshipers see how candles, greenery, poinsettias, manger scenes, and other objects become part of our Christmas traditions.
