Pastor's Page

Posted on September 28, 2005 ...

In the late 1980's and early 1990's it was my privilege to work on my doctorate under the supervision of Dr. Jack Prince, pastor of West Hills Baptist Church in Knoxville. Dr. Prince was a contemporary of my father, both of them serving long-term pastorates in the city. In addition to being a gregarious minister and scholar, Dr. Prince was an avid fan of University of Tennessee athletics. (I remember a day he canceled one of our sessions at the last minute so he could attend a Lady Vols Basketball Game.)

In the early 1990's the Tennessee Baptist Convention held it's annual meeting in Knoxville. At this gathering, Dr. Prince was nominated as a candidate for Vice President of the Tennessee Baptist Convention. The time this election took place was during a long run of University of Alabama football victories over our beloved Big Orange. The speech recommending Dr. Prince to be Vice President closed with this reference to one of his distinctions: The last time that Tennessee defeated the Crimson Tide at Neyland Stadium, Dr. Jack Prince prayed the game's invocation! (Dr. Prince won the election in a landslide!)

My friend enjoyed the notoriety of having a small connection to a significant football victory. In a similar vein, I like to think that last Friday's end to the Bradley Central High School football team's losing streak had a little something to do with our church's providing the team's pre-game meal! Does anybody know how we can attain a small piece of the goal posts that came down? Those indeed were mighty good burgers and fix'ins! Could they have done it without us?

Many thanks go out to those of you who gave food, equipment, decorations, and time in this labor of love. It was another example of North Cleveland Baptist Church at its best! Special appreciation goes to Sherri' Littrell for her coordinating work toward this event.

This Sunday morning we will continue to look at some of the ?¢‚Ǩ?ìQuestions Jesus Asked?¢‚Ǩ¬ù during His ministry. Are you a worrier? Come and hear some of the assuring words of comfort and security offered by our Lord. See you then.
