Pastor's Page

Posted on February 14, 2006 ...

I want to thank our staff for the extra work they performed last week while I was away on my annual pastor?「どィび「s retreat. Special thanks goes to Kyle Wiltshire and Michael Gunter for covering my preaching and teaching responsibilities. It is comforting to know that our activities and ministries are left in such capable hands while I am away. And my heartfelt gratitude goes to you, my church family, for your permission and encouragement regarding the value of these days of retreat. My week away was both renewing and productive. The primary accomplishment of my time was developing my preaching schedule for the next year. As always, I am excited about the things we will share and learn together in the months ahead.
This Sunday I will begin a series of sermons about the role and function of the church. I am concerned about a growing opinion that spiritual maturity and church involvement are independent of each other. While simply going to church does not automatically make someone a good Christian, the absence of participation in a congregation certainly hinders a believer?「どィび「s spiritual development.
In the next seven weeks we will actually be following two series of sermons. On Sunday mornings we will look at some general characteristics the New Testament uses to describe the church. On Sunday nights we will look individually at the seven churches addressed in Revelation chapters two and three. Much like our congregations today, these churches were a blend of strengths and weaknesses, successes and failures.
I am writing these words on Valentine?「どィび「s Day. I can honestly say that the church is one of the objects of my love. While this love does not rival my heart?「どィび「s affection for my wife, children, family or close relationships, I am quite fond and grateful for the contribution that the church has made to the welfare of my life.
Will you join with us over the next seven weeks as we celebrate the church? Jay

Hanging of the Green
6:00 p.m., Sunday, November 30
Hanging of the Green is a worship service centered around the songs and symbols of the Holiday Season. As the Sanctuary is decorated with sights and sounds, worshipers see how candles, greenery, poinsettias, manger scenes, and other objects become part of our Christmas traditions.
