Pastor's Page

Posted on August 29, 2006 ...

This weekend marks the holiday we set aside to honor the social and economic achievements of American workers. Did you know that the origins of Labor Day date back to the late 1800?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s? Congress recognized it as an official holiday in 1894. I find it a bit ironic that the way we celebrate our hard work is to take a day off from our labor! Maybe we should call it Labor-less Day as we use the holiday to relax, play, or enjoy some other non-employment activities.
Our occasional days off from work are welcome times of refreshment. Still, I hope that there is an enjoyment and satisfaction that comes with performing your occupation. I often note how sad it would be if the only thing you received from your vocation is a paycheck.
Some months ago, one of my colleagues on our church staff presented this poem to me. While it is written in the style of Dr. Seuss, I do not know its true authorship. (Thus, I have taken the liberty to revise slightly the version you see below.) Still, it does reflect the joy that I know in my work. I pray you can identify with it in your job, too.

I LOVE MY JOB!

I love my job. I love the pay!
I love it more and more each day.
I love this staff. They are the best!
I love the fun and all the rest!

I love my office and its location.
I hate to have to go on vacation.
I love my furniture, drab and gray,
And piles of paper that grow each day.

I think my job is really swell.
There?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s nothing else I love so well.
I love to work among my peers.
I love their leers, and jeers, and cheers.

I love my computer and its software.
I hug it often though it won?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t care.
I love each program and every file.
I ?¢‚ǨÀúd love them more if they?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢d work once in a while.

I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m happy to be here. I am I am.
I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m the happiest servant in the Kingdom, I am.
I love this work. I love the chore.
And I love the people more and more.

Thanks for the privilege of being both your pastor and employee. Remember: For we are laborers together with God! (1 Corinthians 3:9a) - Jay
