Consider two questions:
What is happening?
What is going on?
At first glance, these two may seem like identical inquiries. However there is a subtle difference in the two that is worth noting. What is happening? is a question of observation. A spectator looking in from the outside can tell what is happening. What is going on? is a question of participation. To really know what is going on with someone or something requires an inside perspective.
For example, imagine a person from a foreign country visits our community and attends his or her first American football game. That person could see what was happening: Heavily padded players on two teams line up against each other. On verbal cue they push, shove, and pull down one other while an odd-shaped ball is carried or thrown down a striped field. But without some background help, that person would have no clue about what was really going on. Only those folks with experience and/or knowledge about the rules and strategies of football know what is going on.
During the days ahead, there will be a lot of decisions before our church that will impact our future. This Sunday, we will consider a decision regarding our paid Student Ministry leadership. Our 2007 Budget Proposal currently is being developed and should be ready for distribution in a couple of weeks. Our Building Study Committee will unveil their recommendations on Sunday night, November 5. Still others are working toward renovation proposals for our sanctuary.
As a church family, one option you have is to watch from the outside and merely see what is happening. However, I strongly encourage you to take the other option and strive to remain informed and invested in our congregation?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s health and welfare. Know what?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s going on in our church. I think you will find it far more inspiring, interesting, and rewarding than the perspective of a mere spectator. Prayerfully yours, Jay
