In last Sunday morning?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s sermon, I referred to a statistic quoted recently in Baptist Press from a Missions Researcher named Justin Long. The stat said that the average Christian in North America gives 50 cents per week to international missions. I went on to mention that last year individuals in our church gave twice that rate to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions: an average of one dollar per week. While I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m proud to be ?¢‚Ǩ?ìabove average?¢‚Ǩ¬ù, this weekly amount represents less than the cost of a cup of coffee.

That got me thinking?¢‚Ǩ¬¶on any given week I indulge myself to at least a couple of coffee purchases at a local restaurant or coffee shop. My conservative estimation is that this costs me over $150.00 a year. What does this mean? It says that, if I do not give a gift to international missions exceeding $150.00, my personal finances state that my coffee indulgence is more important to me than my desire to see the gospel shared globally. (I am grateful to God to be able to give far beyond this amount.)

Do you have any indulgences? Of course, we all do. We all treat ourselves frequently in some way beyond the bare essentials of life. Your indulgences may include a daily snack or soft drink. They could be an occasional dinner in a nice restaurant, attendance at a sporting event or concert, a piece of electronic equipment, or high-speed internet. The list of our potential indulgences is almost limitless.

Consider the financial cost of these items in your own life as compared to your gift to world missions through the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. Our church?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s goal is to raise over $27,500.00 for this offering over the next four Sundays. I know of few churches that have such ambitious aspirations. Still, it is well within our abilities. We simply need to give world missions the proper priority. Certainly serving the Great Commission is more valuable than these indulgences.

Please make this a matter of prayerful consideration and giving in the weeks ahead. Jay
