Once again the people of North Cleveland Baptist Church have made the Christmas Season one of the highlights of our church year. There are so many good reasons that the Holidays are Holy Days for our congregation. Worship events are gifts of praise to the Lord in celebration of His gift of His only Son to us! Parties and holiday fellowships embrace the joy that God?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s people possess because their Savior has come! Multiple ministries extend grace toward international missions, local ministries, homebound members, and other worthy destinations. Through the exchange of literally hundreds of Christmas Cards we tell one another of our care and appreciation.
Yes, this is a time when the people of God shine forth the message and love of Jesus in a most extraordinary way. All these actions merely reflect the light and love brought into our world through the arrival of Jesus:
In Him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. John 1:4-5 KJV
About seventeen hundred years ago, Christian leaders resolved to have a formal celebration time honoring Jesus?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ birth. Late December was chosen partly because this marks the time of the winter solstice, when the days start getting longer and gradually the light of the sun comes more and more into the world. Before the days of electric lights, long dark winters brought greatly increased threats to health, safe travel, and security. The return of the sun brought hope to everyone, assuring people that darkness was in retreat and could not resist the appearing of light.
The arrival of Jesus brought such illumination of God into our world. No longer need we wonder about the character of God. No longer need we be in darkness about the way to a relationship with our Heavenly Father. No longer is the path to heaven uncertain. There is no longer anything to fear ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú the light of the world has come! Jay
