A grocer put up a sign that read Eggplants, 25 cents each or Three for $1.00. All day long customers came in exclaiming, Don't be ridiculous! I should get four for a dollar. Each time the grocer granted their requests and packaged four eggplants. After seeing this conversation go on several times, one observer finally asked the grocer, Aren't you going to fix the mistake on that sign? The smiling grocer replied, What mistake? Before I put up that sign no one was buying eggplants at all!. You cannot help but admire the creative way that grocer used to attract attention to his product.
I sometimes ponder about effective ways to attract unchurched people to North Cleveland Baptist Church. While methods such as media advertising and mail outs have their place, the most effective method for people to find our church is to be invited by one of our own church members.
Our congregation's staff and leadership covenant to do all within our means to provide a receptive, informative, inspiring, relevant, and consistent environment for all who attend. Who can you invite to partake in our ministries?
Fans of professional football will no doubt remember the name Jerry Rice. He is one of, if not THE, greatest receiver of all time, holding at least 14 NFL records. Yet this Crawford, Mississippi native played college football at a tiny school named Mississippi Valley State University. When asked why he attended such an obscure university in Itta Bena, Mississippi, Rice responded, Out of all the big time schools to recruit me, Mississippi Valley State was the only school to come to my house and give me a personal visit. Sure, other schools sent glossy brochures and materials, but only one showed Rice personal attention.
Will you reach out to someone you know and ask him/her to attend with you this Sunday? For many, your personal invitation will make the difference in bringing attention to what God is doing in our congregation. Jay
