Pastor's Page

Posted on September 20, 2007 ...

There was an extremely wealthy man who employed a foreman that was extremely helpful to him on construction projects. One day, the wealthy man approached the foreman to tell him that he was going on an extended vacation and was leaving an assignment for his skilled employee: "I want you to build a house that is wonderful. Spare no expense on materials and construction. I will be gone for six months and when I return I want you to hand me the keys to this new house." The foreman started the project and realized that if he used substandard materials, he could pocket most of the money. And that is exactly what he did. He built a second-rate house with second-rate materials. However, it did look great from the outside.

When the rich man returned, he took the keys to the house and asked, "Did you build me a great house and did you use the finest materials?" To both inquiries the foreman replied, "Yes." His boss said, "Great, because this house is for you." He then handed the foreman the keys.

God asks us to do what we do for Him with quality and devotion. Initially, it may appear that we will gain something for ourselves by extending only second-rate efforts. But when we do, we ultimately hurt ourselves.

This Sunday evening, we will continue to look at the different gifts and talents God has given us for the purpose of building His house, the church. Prayerfully, our study will help us define and/or affirm the purpose God has for our lives. But this discovery is only half of the quest. It must be followed up with a resolve to give our best effort, both for God's benefit and our own. An old hymn declared it well:

Our talents may be few. These may be small.
But unto Him is due our best, our all.
