Pastor's Page
Every week in the time we assemble in the sanctuary for worship a number of messages are projected through our video system upon the front wall. Most of these have to do with upcoming events in our church. But one is a subtle reminder of a truth that applies to every congregation including our own. It reads:
The Church Exists For Those Who Do Not Attend It. I confess that I am among those people who regularly need prompting of this reality. Otherwise we fall to the common mistake of thinking that the church exists to serve our own needs rather than others. During late October our church has planned a number of ministries whose primary beneficiaries are folks who do not attend our church:
On Friday night October 26 we will be feeding the Walker Valley High School football team. A sign up sheet will soon be circulating to give you the opportunity to provide food items, to help make preparations, and/or to assist with clean up.
On Sunday October 28 we will have our annual Campfire Worship. This year we will move it to The Shed amphitheater on the north side of our property. Also this year we are sending invitations out to about 300 of our nearest neighbors, encouraging them to join us for this event.
On October 31 we again will be providing free portraits at the Mainstreet Cleveland Block Party. Volunteers are needed to help staff several shifts at our booth. Soon our worship registration form will provide you with a place to indicate your willingness to assist in this ministry. But do not get the idea that helping with these events is totally self-sacrificial. In reality, by giving ourselves for the benefit of others, we gain a great sense of reward and fulfillment. As Francis of Assisi said in his familiar prayer, It is in giving that we receive. Thanks in advance for your help. Jay
Pastor's P.S. On October 18, 2007 the Bradley Baptist Association will hold its autumn meeting. If you would like to represent our church as a messenger at this gathering, please contact the church office.
