TRICK OR TREAT

My childhood memories of Halloween are much more about treats than about tricks. I seriously doubt that our homemade outfits tricked anyone into believing that we kids were real ghosts, hobos, or superheroes. Granted, I have a few vague memories of houses that were hit with eggs or rumors (never confirmed) of candy sabotaged with needles or other sharp objects. But my overwhelming recall of October 31 is not about tricks at all. There was nothing sinister about Halloween. Rather, it was all about the fun of going door-to-door with my friends and gathering the treats!

Along the way through my community I would cross paths with many of my friends. During these encounters we would pause long enough to compare our respective "stashes" of candy. Through these conversations, a "network" of information quickly spread regarding what treats were being given out at what houses.
Today, parents warn children about collecting homemade treats. But back then, we flocked to the places that gave out homemade candies. The Foster's across the street especially were popular because they gave homemade popcorn balls to their Trick or Treaters.

Again this year Halloween gives us the opportunity to prove a homemade treat to our community. We will be taking and giving free portraits of the folks attending Cleveland's Downtown Block Party next week. In exchange, these people will treat us by sharing contact information about their home. Later, we can extend further information about our church and its ministries with them. Our booth will be on 1st Street across from the south side of the Courthouse.

We could still use some volunteers to assist with this Wednesday's event. No training or experience is necessary. If you have not yet volunteered and want the evening to be a real TREAT for you, sign up on this week's registration form.      Jay
