I enjoy preaching in series. A collection of sermons around a single topic gives the chance to discover greater detail and higher enlightenment. In reflecting over my 25 years of preaching, my most common topic for a sermon series has been the family. Every few years I am compelled to put together a series of messages that center on the subject of the home. One reason to return again and again to this topic is because our family dynamics are always evolving. Our family roles change with time. In our early years we grow from dependent children to independent young adults. Later, we likely get married, become parents, and eventually evolve into grandparents. During this time, death, divorce, and other factors drastically affect our family situations. At every stage we need to consult God's biblical wisdom regarding our family responsibilities. Aside from our salvation, no area of our life brings more fulfillment than sound family relationships. One of the best services I can bring in my preaching ministry is to share biblical insights regarding the home. The Bible has much to say about the family and more examples of family life than can be squeezed into a single sermon series. The series of sermons begins this week by addressing a very powerful influence on family life: finances. Later, we will look at some of the families in the Bible. When asked if she had a normal family, one lady replied that the only thing normal in her family was the knob that said NORMAL on the clothes dryer. Do you realize that challenging home situations are nothing new? It may surprise you that the Bible openly discusses the flaws found in many families. None were what we may describe as normal. Yet, God's grace somehow manages to work through all of their imperfections. Join in faithful attendance as together we will seek and celebrate the work of God through our homes. Jay
