Posted on June 13, 2008 ...

I sometimes declare that I have never had an original idea in my life. That may be a bit of an overstatement, but I know that in my work I routinely borrow and adapt material from a variety of resources.
I say that to tell you this: Because of all the Vacation Bible School preparation taking place this week, I had an idea this morning about a parody of Clement Clarke Moore's familiar Christmas poem "A Visit From Saint Nicholas." You probably better know it by its opening line: 'Twas the night before Christmas...
My thought was about a piece of poetry beginning with ... 'Twas the week before VBS.... But, I thought, Surely someone else has had that idea. Why don't I do a search on the internet? Perhaps some creative person already has composed such a poem. So I Googled several variations of that opening phrase...and found no matching "hits". Thus, I was left to my own writing abilities. Here is what I composed so far.

'Twas the week before VBS and all through the church,
Preparations were going as for many details we'd search.
The rooms were transforming with Polynesian flair,
With hopes that many children soon would be there.
With Linda Brink in a frenzy and I learning motions.
The idea of settling down was a distant far-fetched notion.

That is all I have so far. It is certainly NOT on its way to becoming a classic. Like other folks I'm a bit swamped to finish it right now, but I am excited about our 2008 VBS. Over 1500 flyers have gone out. Postcards have been sent to all families from outside of our church who had children here last year. Radio and newspaper promotions are taking place. And it is still not too late for YOU to be involved. How? I'm glad you asked:

?Ǭ? Think of someone you can invite to VBS.
If necessary, offer transportation.
?Ǭ? Make a contribution toward VBS expenses.
?Ǭ? Help. Even if you can assist part of the time, your presence will be valuable. And we can always use folks for our Family Fun Night with The Dazzling Dorrells on Friday, June 20.

See you Sunday and hope to see you next week as we visit Outrigger Island. Be there.... Aloha Jay
