In recent weeks I have engaged in a personal study of the life of David. In I Samuel the early stages of his rise to the throne of Israel is chronicled. These were trying days for David. He had gone from shepherd to giant killer over night. His popularity soared to the point that he was more adored than the king. Because of his jealousy of David, and because of his personal failure before the Lord, King Saul began a campaign to kill David. Just as quickly as David became famous, he became a man on the run from a crazed ruler.

While David was running he began to gain a following. Look at what the Bible says about the people who joined David as he fled from the murderous king; ��All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered around him, and he became their leader.�� (I Samuel 22:2a) I find this to be interesting. While David was on the run for his life, it is interesting to note that he had already been anointed by the prophet Samuel as the next King of Israel (see I Samuel 16). So the people who first flocked to the future king were not the rich and powerful, but the rejects of that society.

As we continue our emphasis on the family, let us remember that as a church family we must seek to meet the needs of the hurting and dejected. Taking care of those in need is one of the most Christian things we can do. It is also one of the primary designs of the family. As a family, let��s love one another and those around us who are in need, because we never know when we��ll find ourselves in need of help from someone else.
