Student Ministry

Posted on May 26, 2004 ...

Summer is a great time of year, especially in Student Ministry. During the weeks when schools are closed, youth groups have some of their best times. Camps, mission trips, and daytime activities abound. However, one element of the ministry that often slips unnoticed to the wayside during the summer is Bible Study and Worship on Sunday mornings. Attendance, more times than not, goes down over the summer months. This summer the church staff is trying to combat this monster known as the “Summer Slump.” Here is my plan for how we will reverse the trend in the Student Ministry.

Starting June 6 there will be a contest in the youth department involving three elements: 1) bringing you Bible to church, 2) bringing visitors to church, and 3) the attendance of the members of the class. Each student that brings his or her Bible to Sunday School during the summer months will earn their class 1000 points. For every visitor that attends a class each week 2000 points will be awarded. Whichever class has the most visitors will earn an additional 5000 points. Finally, for the class that has the best percentage of their group in attendance 5000 points will be awarded.

Each week the winner of the Slump Busters Award will earn a box of fresh, hot doughnuts from Dunkin Doughnuts. The class that has the most points overall at the end of the summer (Sunday August 8) will earn a free trip to Six Flags. Any student that comes to Sunday School all ten weeks of the summer will also get to go on this trip and all students who come eight of the ten Sundays will win a free CD at the end of the summer.

Also, remember that Florida Camp sign-ups are going on right now. It’s $150 in May and $160 in June. May is running out so pay up now to get the cheaper rate. For any adult that wants to go the cost is only $100. See you around this summer as we work together to be "Slump Busters!"

Hanging of the Green
6:00 p.m., Sunday, November 30
Hanging of the Green is a worship service centered around the songs and symbols of the Holiday Season. As the Sanctuary is decorated with sights and sounds, worshipers see how candles, greenery, poinsettias, manger scenes, and other objects become part of our Christmas traditions.
