Student Ministry
One of my favorite movies of all time is the 1985 hit Back to the Future. In the film a teenager from the 80’s, played by Michael J. Fox, goes back to the 50’s, runs into his parents, and craziness ensues. While I am not currently going to the past, I am having a Back to the Future moment. See, as I write it is Friday, June 18. This article will go to print sometime next week when I’m at youth camp in Florida. Most of you will read these words when you receive your Evangel, which will be later in the week, or at church Sunday morning. By that time I’ll be back from Florida, a little more sunburned and a lot more tired. So, hello from the past- how are things in the future?
If I knew I could do something today that would change the future and make it better, like what happened in Back to the Future, by all means I would do it. As soon as I say that, I realize I can do something today that will make the future better - pray! The real question, then, is why don’t I spend more time in prayer. The answer is it takes time and energy. Our world today is centered on saving time and energy. Thus when something comes around that is not time and energy efficient, it gets pushed to the side. Unfortunately, all too often, that’s what happens to prayer.
I had a teacher in seminary that would pray, “Lord, help me want to want to spend time with You, because if I wanted to on my own, I’d do it.” That is my prayer for myself this week and for our students as we are in Florida Camp. I pray that we want to want to have an experience with God that will change our lives and bring us back new people. I also ask you to remember our students this week. Even if you are reading this on Sunday morning and we’re already safely back, ask to Lord to be with us now that we are back from camp and to follow through on the changes and instructions God has given us.
The last day to sign up for the mission trip is July 4th.
