Student Ministry

Posted on December 1, 2004 ...

I think I’d have to agree with the classic Christmas tune, this is the most wonderful time of the year! The malls may not be too wonderful (Walmart is never wonderful!) but the atmosphere of the Christmas season is truly joyful. For me, part of the greatness of the season is how close it falls to Thanksgiving and that these two great celebrations go hand-in-hand.

I really feel Thanksgiving, more and more, is becoming a lost Holiday. I specifically remember being in our mall at the end of October and seeing the picture with Santa Clause display already up and the Christmas carols blaring over the speakers. October! Like Charlie Brown says, “Good Grief!” Whatever happened to Thanksgiving?

Even though Thanksgiving is already past, I want to use this article to write a little bit about what I’m thankful for. I hope you won’t mind.

I am thankful for my wife. We’ve been married almost eight months now and she is God’s number one blessing in my life. I am thankful for our country and the freedoms we enjoy. I am thankful for my parents who raised me in the way I should go. I am thankful for this church who graciously employs me and encourages me in my ministry. I am thankful for our students who constantly challenge me to grow in my faith and bring great joy to my heart. Most of all, I am thankful for Jesus who came to this earth, lived a perfect life, died on the cross for all of our sins, and rose from the grave three days later. I have so much to be thankful for!

As we celebrate the birth of Jesus remember to give thanks. Thanksgiving and Christmas coming so close together is not an accident. Remember the words of Paul in I Thessalonians 5:16-18, “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas!
